As some of you might remember, I started my home based business called "Country Fancies" over 20 years ago. At that time, I worked mainly with silk and dried flowers. As the years went on, my creativity changed and about 12 years ago I started painting on glass. That grew to include other items such as floorcloths, tins, and now custom note cards. As time went on, the glass painting took over and I stopped making floral arrangements. Eventually, I realized that "Country Fancies" no longer suited me. I tried hard to come up with a new name for my business.
During the time that I was looking for a new name, I went through a horrible life experience. In April 2002, I was the victim of a violent crime. I was raped by a stranger who entered my home, uninvited. During the following 1 1/2 years, I dealt with many things. I am lucky that the person who did this to me was caught, only one week later. We had the trial and sentencing. On June 2, 2003, the day of the sentencing I found a wonderful strength I never knew I had and I was able to make my victim impact statement. He received "life" with all but 25 years suspended. After that day I was a new person. The strength and pride I felt was amazing. I decided to use my name for my new business name and created the "halo" on my "K" as a symbol of strength. It is with that, that I offer any victim the strength I found. I hope to spread the word to other victims and want to stress the importance of speaking out. The day I was able to speak and say what I needed to say was the best day of my life. It is important, not only for justice but for your own healing.
I encourage all people to spread this word, as I find it to be important for all people, no matter what age they are. It is important to be good role models for our children so they will never feel any shame in being a victim.
I thank all of you who have shown me your continuous support. It is hard to believe that is has been 7 years since this happened to me and my new life began. My friends and family still show me their continuous support everyday. I also thank those of you who have taken the time to read this message and tell me how you feel about it.
I hope you will remember to support the ones you love when they are in need. A small sign of support will go a long way.
My life and business have changed in the last years after my horrible incident. I have learned many things due to the experience and I feel I have changed in a good way. I have become more aware of the important things in life. I now work in a preschool with 4 year olds. Early Child hood Education was my original career. It had been 23 years since I worked in that field. This has been one of the best things I have done for myself in a long time.
I have also become a big part of my neighborhood's Citizen On Patrol group. I continue to tell my story in a effort to let people become more aware of their surroundings. If it had not been for an aware neighbor who got part of the guy's tag number, he might not have been caught. She didn't even know something had just happened but was suspicious of the way he was driving through the neighborhood. Her eyes and ears were open and her information was so important. Please follow this link to an article that was written about the importance of Citizen On Patrol. http://explorebaltimorecounty.com/news/100707/call-vigilance/
So, now I enjoy the things I love to do. Be with my family and friends, paint ,and work with children. What more could I ask for?
